CBD Oil For Seizures: Research, Benefits, And Usage

Epilepsy is the leading cause of uncontrolled seizures in children and adults. Of course, seizures may happen for various reasons, especially in kids. However, most other seizure ailments do not last long. However, epilepsy lasts for a long or even lifelong. This is because it occurs due to certain defects in the brain, causing electric currents to spread to various brain parts.

Epilepsy is not a rare condition, as it affects more than 1% of adults in any given nation. Moreover, it affects people of all genders, races, and ethnic backgrounds. The severity of the condition may vary among individuals. Severe and non-voluntary seizures might start at odd places, causing trauma. Epilepsy also causes other issues like temporary confusion, cognitive decline, and mental health issues.(1)

When we talk about epilepsy, we are essentially talking about one of the severe ailments. It causes significant disability. Moreover, there is much stigma associated with the condition. Those affected by the condition often fail to get good jobs. These individuals have good mental abilities, but they still struggle to make lives. In many cases, the condition is relatively mild. There may be even temporary remissions.

Seizures in the condition also vary in their characteristics. In some, epilepsy may influence only some body parts, while in others, the whole body starts shaking uncontrollably. So, the condition has a varied presentation.

Why Consider CBD Oil for Epilepsy?

When we talk about using some natural remedies for more severe health issues, the immediate question arises: why even consider CBD oil for epilepsy? Or why think about using CBD vape pens for the condition. After all, there are hundreds of medications to manage the condition, so even care about using CBD.

Well, there is a sound reason for exploring CBD to manage epilepsy. Although much progress has happened in managing epilepsy, and tens of new drugs have been introduced, there is no single drug that can help in all cases. When single-drug therapy fails to help, doctors might try using different drugs. Next, they might start combining 2-3 medications to control epilepsy.

However, it appears that the disease continues to progress in many cases. Moreover, it seems that many patients develop tolerance to these medications. It means that despite the use of aggressive therapy and multiple medications, about half of the patients never gain complete control over their seizures. Yes, those numbers are massive! Poorly controlled epilepsy is quite dangerous.(2)

This means that in more than 50% of cases, medications fail to completely relieve seizures. Doctors often call this drug-resistant epilepsy, refractory cases, or poorly controlled. It means that there is still scope for exploring other treatment options. So, why not consider CBD?

CBD Oil Epilepsy Success Stories

Resistant epilepsy is among the few conditions in which CBD may work. Yes, and it is among the approved remedies for the condition. There is already an approved medication to manage resistant epilepsy in children, the drug called Epidiolex. It is one of the biggest success stories in CBD history. It proves that CBD can be relatively safe and suitable for managing some severe health issues.(3)

Of course, CBD oil or CBD vape pens are not meant to treat seizures, and these are not remedies. Moreover, one is legally not allowed to make any such claims. Further, these consumer-friendly products contain CBD at much lower dosages than medical CBD or cannabis. It means that these products would not work like those medications. However, one cannot negate that they might be helpful tools.

So, CBD oil or CBD vape pens might not be for treating the condition, but they can help with seizures.

Another reason for considering CBD oil or other CBD products could be that epilepsy is not just about seizures. It is also about headaches, sleep disorders, movement disorders like tics, fluctuating body metabolism, panic attacks, anxiety, and more.(2)

So, even if CBD oil does not help much with seizure control, it can help with a range of health conditions. It may enhance sleep quality and counter stress and anxiety. Thus, it may play a small role in preventing epilepsy episodes.

People often ask how to use CBD oil for epilepsy? Well, there are a few things to note. Firstly, use high-quality full-spectrum CBD oil rich in minor cannabinoids and terpenes and one that contains THC in legal amounts. It appears that products that contain some THC are more potent, with greater benefits.

Finally, ensure that you choose products rich in terpenes. This may have additional benefits like more potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Terpenes are also good for brain health.

The Bottom Line

CBD products will not cure epilepsy. However, there is no doubt that it may help manage these severe health issues. Especially considering that even using multiple drugs fails to prevent seizures in more than half of all the cases, there is definitely a role for CBD products. And, not to forget that there is even an approved drug containing CBD, thus proving that CBD can help counter epilepsy.

CBD products are mild. They might slightly enhance the benefit of drug therapy when used along with the treatment. Additionally, CBD may help reduce pain, confusion, and anxiety and improve quality of life.
