Can You Vape CBD Oil?

People often ask can you vape CBD, or can you vape CBD oil. Of course, you can vape CBD or CBD oil, but the one that is specifically made for the purpose. Not every CBD oil is good for vaping. However, any CBD oil that is made for vaping is good to vape.

In fact, CBD vaping has some distinct benefits. For example, orally ingested CBD has very poor bioavailability, and it is slow to act. Vaping CBD, on the other hand, results in faster action, and it also means higher bioavailability. Higher bioavailability always means greater health benefits.[1]

But there is a reason why so many people are asking, “Can I vape CBD oil?” and "What is inside a vape?" This confusion is due to the very widespread use of the term CBD oil. Of course, CBD oil is mainly for oral intake or sublingual use. However, people commonly call vape juices also CBD oil. This creates much confusion at the end of the day.

CBD oil for Vaping

As already said, there are CBD hemp oil vape for vaping and other CBD oils specifically made for oral intake. Though many might call both CBD oils, they are entirely different products. Thus, it is better to call vaping products as vape juices or e-liquids to avoid confusion.

So, what is the difference? Though both CBD oils for oral intake and vaping contain CBD, terpenes, and even flavours, but they differ in one significant way. CBD oils for oral intake use edible oils as carrier oils such as MCT oil, whereas vapes are either pure distillate cut with terpenes or use propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) as carriers.

Of course, PG and VG are also edible. In fact, PG and VG are common food ingredients or additives. The food industry often uses them as flavour enhancers. However, they are not oils but rather alcohol-based products that produce vape clouds on heating. Thus, they have very different physical properties to edible oils.

CBD oils for oral intake use edible oils as carrier oils like MCT oil or olive oil. These oils may also create some vapours. However, in most cases, they would burn and provide unpleasant sensations. Thus, they are not good for vaping. Hence, vape juices or CBD oils for vaping never contain edible vegetable oils.

Simply said, PG and VG are suitable for both vaping and oral intake. But, CBD oils for oral intake are not perfect for vaping. Of course, if someone accidentally or even intentionally starts vaping CBD oil for oral intake, this would not cause any instant toxicity. However, vaping CBD oil for oral intake will result in an unpleasant experience.

CBD Oil in Vape Pens

So, it is fine to vape CBD oil. However, before putting CBD oil in my vape pen, I would always make sure that it is an oil specifically created for vaping. After all, vaping is not just for health benefits. It is mainly a kind of pleasant experience. One vapes CBD to enjoy its relaxing effect, socialize and have a good time with friends. So, why not choose a high-quality CBD oil for vaping?

CBD oil in vape pens has varying ratios of VG and PG. PG is less viscous and has a faintly sweet taste. VG, on the other hand, is relatively more viscous with a stronger sweet taste. Producers of vape juices or CBD vape oils mix them in varying ratios to create CBD vaping oils for a unique vaping experience. Thus, for example, higher PG vape juices produce stronger “throat hit.”[2]

Of course, apart from PG and VG, there are many other things to see, like CBD’s content and its concentration. It is also vital to see if any product contains CBD isolate or a full-spectrum product.

The Bottom Line

Although vape juices are not oil-based, they contain PG and VG, which are non-toxic alcohols but are often called CBD oils. Additionally, it is also worth understanding that PG and VG have nothing to do with ethyl alcohol, and thus, PG and VG are safe for consumption by people who do not drink alcohol.

There are many types of alcoholic compounds in nature, and even some sweeteners like xylitol are alcoholic compounds.[3] This means that PG and VG are alcoholic compounds but different from ethyl alcohol. Thus, their use or consumption does not interfere with religious beliefs and does not cause intoxication like ethyl alcohol.

CBD oils for ingestion, on the other hand, contain edible vegetable oils as carrier oils that are not good for producing vape clouds. Though they are safe even if used in vape pens, they might spoil the vape pen, and they are also more likely to cause lung inflammation if used in more extensive amounts.

To conclude, one can vape CBD oil, but the one that is created specifically for the purpose. However, one should avoid vaping CBD oil that is for oral intake as that would result in a suboptimal vaping experience. Do you know, What is CBG?
