What is wonderful about CBD is its numerous health benefits. This means that one can use CBD in most health conditions and expect some benefits. Of course, it is not a COPD cure or treatment. However, COPD tends to be chronic and causes much distress, and CBD can help. So, it is fine to ask, “How to use CBD oil for COPD?”
COPD is a very complex disorder causing difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, and excessive mucus production. It may occur due to genetic reasons, such as smoking, pollution, or exposure to allergens and irritants. In many instances, doctors cannot even identify what is making COPD worse in patients. In other instances, even if doctors know the cause, they are often helpless.(1)
Doctors would prescribe many daily medications like antibiotics and drugs that help relax the airway. Doctors may even use medications to suppress cough. People living with the condition often use natural remedies.
CBD can work in many ways. It helps reduce inflammation and suppress infections. In the long run, it can alter the immune response and prevent COPD from worsening. It also reduces mucus production. It has a relaxing effect and thus makes it easy to breathe.(2)
Further, CBD oil may have some other benefits in COPD. Those living with COPD have difficulty sleeping. In the long run, COPD causes mental distress and pain. There are ten reasons for including CBD oil in COPD treatment.
So, now we understand that CBD is good for those living with COPD, it is time to understand various ways of using CBD oil.
Perhaps the best way of taking CBD oil for COPD could be taking it in small amounts daily. One can buy CBD isolate or even full-spectrum CBD oil for COPD. CBD needs time to start acting. One needs to take just a few drops of CBD oil sublingually. Although it starts acting from day one, but it may take much longer to help.
One more thing worth noticing is that one should only buy high-quality CBD oils. High-quality products have terpenes, which are a kind of aromatic compound of natural origin. Terpenes are especially good for fighting infections and cleaning airways. Terpenes work synergistically with CBD.
Yet, another way in which CBD oil may be helpful is that it can help quit smoking.
Here, one of the questions that arises is whether one can use CBD vape for COPD. Well, this may be a good choice for tobacco or nicotine smokers. Tobacco is among the leading COPD causes. Even NHS, UK, recommends switching to CBD vaping to quit smoking. It is tens of times safer than tobacco smoking and may have even multiple health benefits.(3)
COPD is a disease of the bronchial tree or airway. CBD vape affects the lungs and may not be completely healthy. However, studies show that CBD vapes or vapours do not alter airway function.(4) CBD vaping is not a good choice for COPD patients; it is a much better choice than tobacco smoking.
So, if you dislike using CBD oil, a CBD vape pen might be an option. Moreover, remember that vapes produce vapour and not smoke.
As a doctor, I can say that CBD oil is good and safe for prolonged use. However, it may only have mild benefits in some cases. Nonetheless, prolonged use may be beneficial. So, one may need to give it a try to see if it helps. Of course, do not forget to use it for about three months before making conclusions.
COPD is one of the most common respiratory disorders. It tends to be chronic, and very few people living with the condition are ever cured. In the long run, COPD damages the lungs and airways and may even cause lung failure and death.
CBD oil is not a cure for the condition. However, if used along with other treatments, it may ease the symptoms, providing much-needed relief. CBD may reduce inflammation in COPD attacks, help quit smoking, and might have many other benefits.
