Why Does CBD Vape Make Me Cough?

Vaping is about inhaling vapours. However, it takes time to get used to it. Cough, in most instances, occurs due to respiratory tract irritation. So, if you wonder why does CBD pens make me cough, it is most likely due to the irritation.

Human respiratory way or bronchi are quite sensitive. If anything unusual enters that respiratory tract, it may react. In some people, the airway is more sensitive than in others. Such individuals need time to get used to vaping.

Issues like cough are more likely to occur in those starting out vaping or those who vape too much. It is less likely to occur in those switching to vaping from smoking.

Here are a few reasons that might make you cough:[1]

Throat and Lung Irritation

Any kind of vaping may cause some throat or lung irritation. This is especially true if you are new to vaping. Some people are just more sensitive to vaping sensations. Others might have hyperresponsive airways. Most often, these are not reasons to worry. It just takes time to get used to it.

Dryness

CBD vape oil or e-liquids can have a drying effect on your throat and mouth. Dryness can make you more susceptible to coughing, and make you feel seek. Staying hydrated by drinking water before and after vaping can help alleviate this issue.

Higher Dosage

Vaping CBD with a high concentration of cannabidiol can sometimes lead to coughing. High concentrations can produce thicker vapour that may be harsh on the throat and lungs. Therefore, if you experience coughing, start with the lowest possible dosage, and increase the dosage gradually.

Temperature and Wattage

The temperature and wattage settings on your vape device can affect the temperature of the vapour. Higher temperatures can result in hotter and harsher vapour, which may lead to coughing or a burnt vape taste. Adjusting your settings to a lower temperature or wattage may help.

Not all vapes have temperature or wattage settings. Disposable vapes often do not have these settings. Fortunately, disposable vapes also tend to be milder and beginner-friendly. However, if you still experience coughing with disposable CBD vape pens, then try changing the brand.

Inhaling Too Quickly

Inhaling too quickly and deeply can introduce more vapour into your lungs than they can comfortably handle. Slow, controlled inhalation is often more comfortable and less likely to cause coughing.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

Some CBD vape juices contain propylene glycol, a common base liquid in e-liquids. PG can cause throat irritation and may lead to coughing in some individuals. Switching to e-liquids with a higher vegetable glycerine (VG) content or PG-free options can reduce this effect.

Allergies or Sensitivities

Some individuals may be sensitive or even allergic to specific ingredients. One is more likely to be allergic to flavours or additives than CBD. CBD allergy is almost unknown. This is good news, as it means that if you cannot tolerate one vape pen, you may be able to tolerate another one.

Quality of the CBD Product

The quality and purity of the CBD vape product can affect your experience. Choosing high-quality, reputable brands and products can help reduce the likelihood of coughing due to impurities or low-grade ingredients.

Just remember that now it is proven beyond doubt that impurities in poor-quality vapes are the biggest threat. High-quality vapes are far less likely to cause any nuisances.

The Bottom Line

Mild coughing during or after vaping is pretty common. It does not mean anything severe. In most cases, it just indicates throat or airway irritation. By keeping in mind the points discussed above, you can minimize the risk of cough. However, if the cough persists, then it is better to stop vaping and consult a healthcare professional. This is especially true if you have a cough with mucus.
