Does CBD Help Athletic Performance?

CBD is not a performance-enhancing drug. It is not a stimulant and lacks any hormone-like activities. Hence, it is not likely to enhance athletic performance directly. However, its use by sportspeople is common and rising. This is because of its other health benefits.

When it comes to WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), it has removed CBD from the controlled substances list. However, marijuana is on the WADA’s list. Further, WADA bans the use of other cannabinoids in competitive sports. This means that in competitive sports, using pure CBD or CBD isolate vape oil is legal, but using full-spectrum CBD isn’t permitted.[1]

This is because, unlike CBD, other cannabinoids may act as stimulants or significantly alter pain sensation, and thus, they might provide an edge in certain sports. However, CBD does not have potent and immediate pain-killing action. It reduces pain sensation very differently, and it needs time to start acting.

So, does CBD help athletic performance?

If one takes CBD just before participating in some competitive sports, it is not likely to boost sports performance. On the contrary, it may even worsen sports performance due to its relaxing effect.

However, sportspeople can use Pre-filled CBD vape pen to enhance their performance. CBD can help sportspeople train better. For example, studies show that CBD is quite suitable for overcoming muscle soreness. Further, it may also help reduce spastic pains. Additionally, it is quite likely that CBD may boost recovery through other means. Hence, it would be correct to say that prolonged CBD vape and alcohol use may help train and recover better, thus enhancing sports performance.[2]

Although there is no robust evidence, researchers believe that CBD may also help athletes in many other ways. It may help reduce anxiety, enhance sleep quality, and improve focus. It may also affect metabolism and enhance thermoregulation.[2]

Other ways in which it may help sportspeople are by boosting cardiovascular performance, helping lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of infections, improving insulin sensitivity, and more.

The Bottom Line

CBD is by no means a performance-enhancing drug, and thus, its use is legal in sports. However, it is essential to understand that the use of other cannabinoids in sports is still not permitted. Therefore, other cannabinoids are still on WADA’s list of prohibited substances. CBD terminology helps sportspeople by enhancing muscle recovery, reducing anxiety, and increasing mental focus. Some of its benefits might also be due to its beneficial influence on energy metabolism.
